When you are responding to advertised positions through email, employers are getting hundreds of responses. Here’s a simple trick to make yourself stand out from the hordes.


Use the Subject line and put in a compelling message. Most people enter “regarding your advertisement #40604” in the subject line. That’s not going to get anyone’s attention. How about “#1 Ranked Sales Person worldwide at Fortune 500 company” as a subject? Which do you think will work best?

I wrote a resume for a retiring military officer and put “Latest review states: Top 1% of Officers I have known in my 34-year career – Major General” in his subject line. Think it will get someone’s attention? So be creative and use the subject line to grab the reader.
